GENERAL HINTS
Even when carpets have been shaken and beaten they sometimes have a dull look. They can be much improved by a good rub over with a firm pad, damped with petrol. Any sticky spots should bo removed by hot water, and if candle grease has been spilled a hot iron may be applied with blotting paper between the iron and the carpet.
Mice can be prevented from entering a room if crushed naphtha is placed in the holes. Use it liberally. Paste the holes np with wet cement over the naphtha. The cement, which can be bought from any ironmonger, should be mixed to a very thick creamy consistency. « ♦ • ♦
Enamel can bo more successfully applied to small articles if it is first warmed in a can of hot water and the article exposed to heat, so that the surface is about the same temperature as the enamel. After painting the article must bo kept in a warm place to dry. and not placed before an open window.
Saucepans which are to bo used on the open fire should be first rubbed over lightly with grease. This will protect them from burning, and when they are washed the black marks from the fire will be easily removed.
