NORTH-EAST VALLEY W.C.T.U.
There was a good attendance of members at the August meeting of the N.E. Valley W.C.T.U.; which was held in tho Institute. -Miss Gray (president) was in the chair. A welcome was given to Mrs M‘Donald, a visiting sister from Balclutha. Tho speaker for tho evening was the Uev. Mr Foote, Methodist minister for the N.E. Valley, whoso address was interesting and encouraging. He spoke of tho progress which the temperance movement had made during past years. Tho young people of, to-day saw nothing of the evils of alcohol compared to that which the older people of the past generation had seen, and consecpiently did not realise the great necessity for Prohibition. He portrayed in sad yet amusing fashion the way m which alcohol dominated society in the past, penetrating every class—political, commercial, civic, ecclesiastical, _and even into tho home circle. Now, through the steady working, of temperance societies, the .world .was being cleansed from this groat'evil. Miss Gray moved a veto ot_ thanks, which was heartily given. Miss Moss sang the solo. ‘ The River of Life,’ and received thanks. • . D . .. lleports from tho L.T.U. the Birthday League, and tho Cradle Roll departments were read and adopted, me offering was a special free-will one, and was very satisfactory. . .. A netition from the National Council of Women to be sent to Parliament, asking that tho marriage ago be raised, was received for signatures from members. Arrangements were discussed tor tho district conference, to ho hold m tho N.E., Valley Hall on September .28, the N.E. Valley Union being hostesses on this occasion. '
