HOFER’S ESCAPE
REFUGE IN ITALY Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. ROME, August 31. (Received September 1, at 10 a.m.) Hofer crossed the Italian frontier at Bolzano, where he begged the police not to send him hack to inevitable death in Austria. The matter is now in the hands of Signor Mussolini. Bloodstains on the car were explained by the fact that Hofer was wounded during his flight, Hofer will not be extradited so long as he refrains from propaganda. [Pretending that they were bringing another prisoner, several disguised Austrian Nazis entered the cell of Franz Hofer, a Nazi leader, in Innsbruck Gaol and released him after stunning two warders. All escaped in a waiting car, which was pursued by a policeman, who fired several shots and wounded ono passenger, after which the Nazis proceeded on foot, apparently attempting to reach Italy by unfrequented mountain passes.J
