30 CHARGES AGAINST 5 MEN
[Pie Ukited Press Assocutiok 1 CHRISTCHURCH, August 31. - The theft of £l5O worth of jewellery from a : house in Killinchy was the basis of the main charge against five hien to-day. .There were thirty-nine charges in all, ‘ some alleging ’ burglary arid theft, and receiving stolen property. The accused wore Kenneth Joyce Murray (aged 20), Charles Mitchell Newman (aged 22), Arthur Ernest Johns (aged 22), Lester Palmer Irving (aged 23), and Percy John Irving (aged 21). s ’ The youngest of the accused, whoso riame was suppressed, and who was Charged with receiving only, altered his pica to guilty. The charges against him were adjourned for twelve months, and he was ordered to 'make restitution of £3 10s.
Kenneth Joyce Murray pleaded guilty to ten charges of the theft of goods and -bicycles, and two charges of wilfully damaging slot telephones. He was-committed to the Supreme Court for sentence on a charge of breaking and entering by day the dwelling of Mary " Agnes Nixon, at Killinchy. t Murray and Albert Edward Johns were charged with breaking and entering the house of E. G. Kerswill and committing theft. Murray was cominitted to the Supreme. Court for sentence, and Johns for trial on " this charge. . 1 • Charles Mitchell Newman pleaded guilty to two charges of the theft of goods ? and <’» bicycle! and not guilty tb a charge of receiving from Murray. Johns pleaded guilty to a charge of stealing a bicycle aud was convicted, also of receiving goods from Murray. Lester Palmer Irving pleaded guilty to receiving a bicycle, and goods. Percy John Irving was committed to tho Supreme Court for sentence on a charge of breaking and entering at Killinchy. Both the last-named < pleaded guilty to receiving a stolen bicycle from Murray, Chief-detective Dunlop said that Johns and Murray were apparently at the head of the business, and the others had apparently been brought under their influence. Oh the summary charges the accused were sentenced as follows:—Lester Irving and Percy Irving, one month's imprisonment, with hard labour; Newman, six months, with hard labour; Murray, six months, with hard labour; Johns, three months, with hard labour, to be followed by eighteen months’ reformative detention.
