CHEESE OR BUTTER?
HEW ZEALAND PRODUCTION BRITISH EMISSARY'S VISIT Press Association—By Telegraph-Copyright. LONDON, August 30. (Received August 31, at 1.10 p.m.) The ‘ Daily Herald’s ’ agricultural editor, referring to Mr Baxter’s visit, says:— “ Mr Baxter (chairman of the Milk Board) hastily arranged his visit with a view to attempting to persuade the New Zealand farmers to make a big change over from cheese to butter. Members of tbe Milk Board desire this in order that large scale factory manufacture of cheese may be built up, and thus utilise at least the 40 per cent, of British milk, which is now the surplus. “ Mr Baxter hopes to convince the New Zealand farmers that the difficulties which have arisen out of the Ottawa agreement will thus be overcome. Neither Government is anxious to reopen the Ottawa arrangements, but both will bo relieved if the farmers of the two countries settle the matter on a voluntary basis. It would be on the understanding that no official encouragement would be given to factory butter making in Britain.” [A cablegram from London on August 13 read: —“The correspondence between Mr Forbes and Mr Bates (president of tlio National Farmers’ Union), which resulted in the latter’s decision to send Mr Baxter (ex-president) to discuss dairy products problems with New Zealand farmers, has been published. Mr Bates suggests that if New Zealanders insist on the letter of their rights under the Ottawa agreement and send their full exportable surplus to Britain it will result in appalling conditions for-British dairy farmers and will prejudice the British milk marketing scheme.]
