MAD HATTERS’ DANCE

Mad hats, pretty hats, funny hats, big hats, and tiny hats—in fact, every imaginable kind of hat—paraded at the mad hatters’ dance, held on Saturday evening in the Town Hall in aid of the funds of the sports queen. Among hats specially noted were a bevy of brightly-coloured bowlers with wonderful feather mounts, that made always a spot of colour among the dancers, a Mandalay horse’s hat. a three-decker bowler with a tiny one underneath, a plaited hat of immense width which showed the date < September 16. with the sports queen's flag flying on top. a football, stove-pipe hats, mortar boards, hats made from paper bags, and every other variety of paper hat Prizes for the # maddest hats were awarded to Miss Aitken (fishing hat), Miss S. Glendining (hen’s nest), Mrs A. C. Stephens (hat made from jelly mould), Mrs Renfrew Harris (hat made from corks), Mr Maurice Myers (colander ornamented with vegetables), Mr Hope (hat made from cabbage leaves, ornamented with a crayfish).

Other novelties during the evening were ‘ A Golf Ballet,’ by the juvenile pupils of Miss Webster, who appeared in tiny suits of plus-fours, with brightly coloured pull-ons and golf bags, and danced a most delightful ballet suited to the occasion; also a parade of Rachael gowns, suited for morning, afternoon, and evening wear, by Mrs J. Sim, Mrs H. Speight, and the Misses H. Fenwick, H. Porter, M. Crow, B. Williams, I. Hart, Abraham (3), and Hislop. The dance was a very bright affair, and reflected great credit on the committee in charge.
