BURNSIDE STOCK SALES

RISE IN CATTLE PRICES AT END DF SALE

After remaining very much the same as was the rule at the previous sale bullocks showed a sharp rise in value toward the end of to-day’s market. The sheep sale also opened at rates about on a par with those of last week to ease a little for heavy classes later on. The greater part of the fat cuttle entered was comprised of bullocks. The quality was not good, in fact, some of the plainest cattle that have come into the yards were present to-day. There were some big heavy bullocks forward, but these were lacking in finish. There was a good sprinkling of cows and heifers, and some of the latter were of outstanding quality. Values at the opening of the sale were about on a par with those of last week, and there was no noticeable change until the last two races, were offered, when at this stage competition became keener, and prices rose from 10s to 15s a head above the opening rates. A truck of specially good heifers offered on account of Messrs Fleming Brothers, Crookston, realised up to £lO, while bullocks sent in by Mr Stuart Hall, Balclutha, Messrs Johnstone and Sons, Kaitangata, and Mr J. Taken all over, the quality in the fat sheep penning was good. The percentage of good wethers and ewes was greatly in excess of previous sales, and there was spirited bidding at values equal to last week’s rates. Medium sheep were also in demand, these being taken by country butchers, a big number of whom was operating. As ■ the sale was nearing the halfway mark a slight easing tendency was noticeable, heavy wethers and ewes dropping back about Is a head. Medinjn sorts remained unaltered.

There was a satisfactory entry of hoggets, and prices for these were easier by about Is 6d a head. Competition seemed to be maintained at the same pressure in the sheep sale, and it was not likely that prices would alter appreciably. About 100 head of store cattle were placed in the pens under keen competition by graziers. Three and four-year-old bullocks sold at prices ranging from £3 to £5 11s. Other lighter sorts brought from £2 to £3, and a few boning cows sold at the same values. Only about a dozen vealers were in, these bringing from £1 to £2 10s. There was an extra big yarding of pigs, 120 being included in the fat section. Baconers were worth 4fd lb, selling from £2 5s to £2 18s, while an over-supply of porkers was valued at from 4j|d to sd. lb, bringing from £1 18s to £2. One hundred and seventy stores were penned.
