HUNT CLUB BALL

A CONSPICUOUS SUCCESS The Hunt Club Ball in the Town Hall last evening was a conspicuous success, and afforded a rare night’s entertainment for the 350 dancing couples and the public who lined the seats of the main gallery. Special attention had obviously been given to the decorations, which formed a colourful and spectacular scene. Blue and gold and red and black (the club s colours) were prominent throughout, while an outstanding feature was the brush hurdle which extended across the front of the stage and over which appeared the figures of two horses’ heads, giving the impression that the animals .were about to take the fence. Ihe .whole of the stage was decorated with ferns, relieved by red poppies and illuminated with coloured _ lights. The balconies were draped with red and black ribbons. Introductory music was played by the Otago Regimental Band, and the Grand March at 8.40 was headed by the master (Mr J. E. Brunton) and the deputy-master (Mr R. C. Greenslade). The Regimental Band and Frank Scofield’s New Collegians supplied the music, which was practically continuous throughout the evening. Novelty items were presented during the evening by Miss Ngaire Wix, who, costumed as a jockey, appeared in a ‘ John Peel ’ dance: Mr Arthur Mac'donald, who sang ‘John Peel’ and other hunting numbers; and Cecil Cockbnrn and Vivienne Lamb, who delighted in . a ‘ Blue Danube ’ waltz. 'Just prior to the supper, which was arranged on an elaborate scale, Miss ,Wix caused a mild sensation by parading in the hall on Mr J. R. Brown’s .well-known hunter Dandy, which took up a position at the back of the stage and stayed there during the greater part of the evening.
