CABARET PROPRIETOR FINED. Rodney Pankhurst, on a charge of keeping open a cabaret at Seatoun for the purpose of transacting business on Sunday, was fined £2. The defendant had already been heavily fined in connection with the liquor law, and this was taken into consideration.—Wellington Press Association. i THEFT OF GAS. As the result of inserting halfpennies into a gas meter instead of shillings a young wopxan was charged to-day with stealing gas. The offence took place at Wanganui, The meter was read after she left, and when she was located she said she had used halfpennies because she was short of cash at the time. She intended to pay the money'owing. The magistrate said that in view of the probation officer’s report, in which it was stated that the woman was in very poor circumstances, he would admit her to probation for twelve months 'and order her to make restitution.' An order was made, suppressing her name. —Wellington Press Association.
