DOMINION REGISTRATIONS [Per United Press Association.] WELLINGTON, July 20. Official figures show that there were 75,034 on the unemployment register at July 8, an increase of 2,116 compared with the figures at June 10. Or these 5,511 were ineligible for relief for various reasons, leaving 69,523 men a charge on the board’s funds. Of these 48,704 were engaged in the No. 5 scheme, 10,711 on farm schemes, 3,939 were in camps, 1,850 on subsidised employment in the Public Works Department, 3,618 in gold prospecting, and 87 on subsidised employment in various industries. Of the 69,523 men it was estimated that at least 37,500 were engaged on work of a definite reproductive and developmental nature in connection with the dominion’s primary industries. AUCKLAND'S SHARE PROVIDES MORE THAN THIRD OF BOARD'S INCOME [Per United Press Association.] AUCKLAND, July 20. The opinion that the unemployment, funds should be employed in more profitable directions than weeding streets and making rock gardens was expressed at a meeting of the council of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce, and it was decided to urge the construction of an up-to-date motor drive along Waitakere ridge, a thorough investigation of tho Moringside tunnel scheme, and the question of constructing approaches to the harbour bridge. . The president (Mr H. Turner) said the Government had decided to proceed with the construction of the new Post Office in Dunedin and the new railway station in Wellington. It would'he interesting to know, however, what it was intended to do m Auckland. Of £4,000,000 which C o Unemployment Board obtained from the people of New Zealand by way ot special taxation on wages and salaries £1,500,000 was obtained from the Auckland province. It was very desirable that so large a sum should be spent in a useful maimer rather than frittered away in work of no particular value, work which in many cases would have to be done all over again in a few years. ,
