MR NE2L MATTERSOK FORMER SCULLING CHAMPION* Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright SYDNEY, April 6. The death is announced of the Australian sculling identity, Mr Neil Matterson, who was champion of England in 1889 and a competitor in the ■ world’s sculling championship here in the ’nineties. [During the New Zealand and South' Seas Exhibition at Dunedin in 1889-90 Mr Matterson stroked the four-oared crew which won the -dominion professional championship for a £IOO prize ah the monster regatta on this harbour,; In the crew with him were Charles Stephenson (New Zealand sculling champion at that time, who died only about two weeks ago), Benjamin Davis, and the well-known- local sculler, Mr J.M'Grath. , Messrs Matterson and Stephenson ’ also rowed at this regatta in the champion sculls, the former winning from the latter, who beat the rest of the field by “ half a mile,” as the Press reported it. Mr Matterson won the championship of England before he left Home for Australia and New Zealand, whither he journeyed with the then world’s champion sculler, H. E.Searle, who contracted typhoid fever at Colombo and died, being buried in Australia, Before coming across to New, Zealand Mr Matterson rowed William Beach for the world’s championship in Australia, but was beaten. When ho arrived in the dominion he met Mr Stephenson in Auckland, ’ and they decided to come to the exhibition regatta; in 1890. In Dunedin they met Messrs Davis and M'Grath, who were asked to row with them in the big championship event. Mr M'Grath asserts that much of his rowing success could be attributed to what he learned from Mr Matterson during his stay in Dunedin. At that time Mr Matterson was about twentysix years of age, so at the time of his death he would be about sixty-nine.] MR W. E.
