Impressive scenes were witnessed in Calcutta- to-day when the great Mohanimedia festival, the Bakrid, was held. Countless thousands, in the brightest gam congregated,in mosques to offer prajer. Tlie remainder of the day was spent in holiday-making. The poor were not forgotten, and the supplications of thousands of beggars who live on the pavements wore rewarded. Eahorate precautions were taken by the police to prevent disturbances, as this) is a favourite day for communal warfare. Tae scene was repeated on a smaller scalfe in every town and village in India. j 1 I EIGHTEEN INJURED IN RIOT. CALCUTTA, April 6. (Received April 7, at 11 a.in.) Eighteen people were injured in dailies between Hindus and Moslems at Bel ala, a suburb of Calcutta, in connexion with the Moslem festival. A dispute arose over Moslems taking two covs to a mosque for sacrifice, to which Hildas and Sikhs objected. The religioiists attacked each other with kni.'cs. sticks, and stones. Tho riot wn; eventually quelled by the police.
