SCHOOLS’ SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS

HIGHLY-SUCGESSFUL MEETING NEW ZEALAND RECORD TO REG. GEDDES The heats of the Otago State primary schools’ swimming championships were decided last night at the Municipal Baths before a large crowd of spectators, who were treated to some very fine swimming. The standard all round was good, promising even better performances when the finals are decided to-night. Although the times of such past schoolboy champion swimmers as Reg. Geddes, W. J. Jarvis, and S. Jarvis were not equalled last night, it is scarcely to be expected that such outstanding 1 performances can be ’ recorded every year, but among what might be termed a new batch of swimmers much promising material was brought to light, and in. the boys’ events good times were recorded in many or the heats, indicating that there should be some spirited racing in the .finals. One record was broken in the boys’ section, Roy Geddes (a younger brother of Reg." Geddes), of Albany street,_ breaking his own record of 23 4-ssee in the first, heat of the 2oyds breast-stroke championship for boys under twelve, Geddes’s time being 22sec. A promising swimmer in the boys’ free-style events was C. M'Gregor (Arthur street), who won his heat in the 33 l-3yds hoys’ championship under thirteen in 21 3-ssec, and his heat of the 33 l-3yds boys under fourteen in 21 2-ssec, which were the best times of the night in the boys’ free-style events. Other good swims in the former event were put up by W. W. Buckland (Albany Street), K. Leckie (Albany Street), and C. Ferguson (Albany Street), and the final should bo well contested. In the 33 l-3yds hoys under fourteen P. Miller (Maori Hill) also swam very well, winning his heat in 22 2-ssec. The times were slow in the 66 2-3yds championship, boys over, fourteen, but in the 50yds breaststroke, hoys under fourteen. D. Tuckwell (Arthur Street) won his heat in the very fair time of 47 2-ssec, Quite good times were recorded in the 25yds championship, boys under twelve, the best being that of W. Williams (Albany Street) in the first heat, which he won in 17 l-ssec. In the 25yds championship, boys under eleven, D. Leckie (Albany Street) won his heat in the good time of 18 3-ssec. , The outstanding performer in the girls’ section was Miss Ruby Jarvis, a sister of W. J. Jarvis and S. Jarvis (who hold so many of the boys’ records at this meeting). Miss Jarvis established two new records during the evening, winning her heat of the 25yds girls under' thirteen in 17sec, tworfifths of a second faster than Hiss G. Rix’s previous record, established in 1930. In the 33 l-3yds championship, girls under fourteen, Miss Jarvis won her heat in 24sec, 1 2-osec better than the record established by Miss Olive Buckland last year. Miss Jarvis showed very promising style, and in eagh case won easily. Good times were also put up in the 25yds breast-stroke championship; girls under fourteen, Miss N. Moore (Normal) winning her heat ipi 21 4-sseo, only four-fifths of a second outside the existing record. Miss C. Knowles (Albany Street) won her heat in 23seo, Miss G, Etheridge (Musselburgh) in similar time, and Miss Z. Wilson (St. Clair) in 23 l-ssec.

A feature of the evening was the successful attack made by Reg. Geddes, of the Kiwi Club, on his own New Zealand 100yds intermediate boys’ breast-stroke record. The mark stood at 75 3-6 sec, but, getting away to a splendid start and swimming magnificently, Geddes put up one of the finest efforts of his brilliant career to shatter his own record by covering the distance in 74 4-6 sec. Geddes cut out, the first 33 l-3yds in 20sec, 66 2-3yds in 45 l-ssoc, and 74 4-ssec for the 100yds. It was fitting that Geddes should have made his attempt on the record at the schools’ carnival, since many of his fine performances were put up., at this meeting a few years ago. Last night marked the third time that Reg. Geddes had improved- tjpon the previous best performance for 100yds intermediate boys’ breast-stroke. Before he sot about the task of establishing new figures the record stood at 77 4-ssec to the credit of E. C. Heard (Canterbury), and it is worthy of note that his latest record was the twenty-third time he has improved upon existing New Zealand records in either the junior or intermediate divisions, Geddes’s record attempt was supervised by Otago Swimming Centro officials. A water polo match was staged by Dunedin A (winners of the Donald Stuart banner) and The Rest, an interesting game being won by the undefeated team by 5 goals to 3. The conduct of the meeting left nothing to bo desired, the general arrangements being in the hapds of Mr G. Swan (chairman of the Schools’ Swimming Committee) and Mr R. S. Harrison (acting secretary) and the usual efficient band of assistants, A long programme was got off without the slightest hitch or delay, and a special feature w r as the excellent starting. Dunedin A beat the_ Rest by five goals to three after an interesting and well-contested game, though the shooting of both sides left a good deal to be

desired. The Rest did more than its share of attacking, but lacked Dunedin’s combination and idea of positional play, while in goal for Dunedin A P. W. Harkess sated his side time and again. Brian Kerr was often prominent for the winners, and frequently did some good swimming up with the ball, while J. 0. Byrnes also played a most serviceable game. For the losers M, Taylor was the outstanding player, and frequently turned defence into attack by clever play. Reg. Geddes indulged in plenty of swimming with the ball, abd at times handled cleverly, while J. Swan also played a good game. For Dunedin A goals were scored by J. O’Driscolh R. J. Fleming (2), J. Barry, and J. 0. Byrnes, while for the Rest S. M'Kenzie, Reg. Geddes, and A. Thomas' each found the net once. The teams were: Dunedin A—P. W. Harkess, D. Newall, J. O’Driscoll, B. Kerr, J. 0.. Byrnes, J. Barry, and R. J. Fleming; the Rest—G. Munro, P. E. Mathieson, J. Swan, M. Taylor, S. M‘Ken sic, Reg. Geddes, and A. Thomas. Mr D. C. Bannatyne was the referee. LIFE SAVING The first stage of the second school girls’ life saving competition was decided at the Technical High School yesterday afternoon under the auspices of the Otago Head Centre of the Royal Ljfe Saving Society, sis teams taking part in the land drill. The Waitaki Girls’ High School, which has entered for the first time, will be examined both in land drill and water work on Monday afternoon, when the other six teams will be examined at the Municipal Baths in the water work. The land drill comprised the five methods of rescue, the releases, and resuscitation, and a very high standard was attained by all the teams, though some were just a little inclined to be rather hurried in their method of doing the Various releases. For general proficiency and smartness the Girls’ High School team scored, this team giving a very neat display indeed, though it Inst a little on its resuscitation, St. Hilda’s also gave a very neat display, but for that, matter only three points separate the first team and the sixth in the land drill, and possession gf the shield will depend even more largely than usual on the water work. The teams taking part in the competition arb;— Technical High School.—Misses N. Olds, G. Rix, A. Gillies, and M. Fowler. Columba College.—Misses D. Anderson, I. FrAper, B. Bogg, and L. M'Kenzie. St. Hilda’s College.—Misses S. Fitchett, J, Barnes, E. Porter, and B. Macassey, Archerfield College.—Misses R. Ross. H. Hislop, K. M'Kay, and E. Carswell. Girls’ High School.—Misses B. Juris?. M.
