TAIERI RIVER TRUST
MONTHLY MEETING Mr T. M. Ball presided over the monthly meeting of the Taieri River Trust. There was a full attendance of commissioners. CORRESPONDENCE. The Perpetual Trustees. Dunedin, notified that they were acting as trustees in the estates of three ratepayers.—Noted. The Minister of Lands, Wellington, acknowledged the trust’s application for participation in the scheme for the remission of rates as proposed to be granted to county councils.—Received. David Cameron (Outram) wrote pointing out that the outlet to the pipe line coming on to his property from underneath the contour channel had been filled in by the excavator.—lt was decided that a drain of three chains should bo cut to give an outlet. The District Engineer of the Public Works Department, Dunedin, notified that the special grant of £l2O for the contour channel had been paid into the trust’s. account. —Received. P, Bathgate and six others askecj that the drain from Duck Creek at J. M‘Neill’s to W. Lindsay’s should be cleaned.—Referred to the Works Committee to report to next meeting. P. F. M‘Hattie and eight others asked that Loch Katrine drain should be attended to. —Referred to the Works Committee to report to next meeting. The Department of Labour, Dunedin, forwarded particulars of a farm cam)) scheme.—The secretary was instructed to post up copies of the letter at the local dairy factories. The Public Works Department. Wellington, enclosed vouchers relating to the fees and expenses of the recent commission—a total of £2Bl 4s Id.—The trust decided to obtain a full report of the commission’s findings. J. Cameron, Berwick, asked for a new lease of seven years, following the expiry of the present lease, for the old Waipori Lake area, at present held by him. —It was decided that the trust could not release the land without advertising it. REPORTS. The Chairman of the Works Committee stated that no detailed report had been drawn up for the meeting, as the committee had considered that sufficient work was in hand. He suggested that tho present works should bo completed before any new undertakings wero allocated. —Approved. The Inspector reported that Munro’s gang had cleaned 22 chains of the new cut. Lee Creek had been cleaned from where the excavator had finished up to Morrison’s. New planks had been inserted in the bridge at Cuttance’s over Kirk’s drain; in the bridge on “B” drain, and in the bridge at Sinclair’s on tho contour channel. Maintenance work had been carried out on the river bank from Berkley to Outram. Marshall’s gang had finished deepening Upper Duck Creek, had cleaned about one milo of the new cut, and 12 chains of the drain from the new cut to Kirk’s drain. —Received. The members of the trust during the month had inspected Mr J. Young’s property at Outram, the low-lying part of which required draining.—After discussion the trust resolved to inform Mr Young that it could not see its way to undertake the internal drainage of his farm, and could not make any exemption from rating. Messrs Wilson and Marshall reported on their inspection of the crossing pipes under the road at the borrow pits. These,, it was stated, had silted up badly.—lt was decided that the inspector should take a man for a day to clean the entrances to pipes. GENERAL. Tho matter of cleaning the gorse from the contour channel came uip for discussion. The previous contractor for portion of this work, it was stated, had abandoned his contract.—Mr Marshall was appointed to inspect the gorse and define the area to bo cleared. Tho Works Committee was empowered to inspect and re-deck, if necessary, tho second bridge from tho top of the main drain at Moynihan’s. Messrs Hackott and Dow wero appointed to represent the River Trust on the Outram Unemployment Board. The trust’s deputation to Wellington reported on its recent visit.—After discussion on the report, a vote of thanks was passed to the members of the deputation. Tho Secretary of the Trust was empowered to arrange with the secretary of the Outram Unemployment Board to attend to the request of the Henley School Committee for a workman for a few days. Mr John Garrett waited on the trust on behalf of tho Taieri County Council with a view to purchasing for that body tho gravel taken out of the bed of the creek at Reid’s, Woodsido. —The trust decided to offer tho gravel free of cost, provided the county council constructed the access to it.
