ST. HILDA BOROUGH
MEETING OF COUNCIL At last night's meeting of the St. Kilda Borough Council there were present the mayor (Mr J. Beattie) and Ors H. H. Leary, J. Robinson, T. D. B. Roy, J. A. Carman, G-. Stratton, W. G. Baird, E. Lougwor'th, and A. D. Edgar. Accounts amounting to £1,614 5s 8d were passed for payment. The amount of water consumed in the borough during the last fortnight was 4,988,000 gallons at a cost of £124 14s. In returning thanks for a donation from the council of £lO towards the funds, the secretary of the St. John Ambulance Association pointed out that during the last year St. Kilda was responsible for ninety-three calls for transport, valued at £54 15s 6d, for whicli £2O 2s 6d was received. In addition to transport the three' district nurses spent a considerable portion of their time in.the borough. This work was done gratis. These facts would justify the association’s claim for financial support.—Received. The interim secretary extended an invitation to representatives from the council to attend a meeting at the Town Hall on March 24 to consider the proposals of the committee regarding the formation of a South Island Tourist League.—The mayor and Cr Leary were appointed to attend the meeting. Mr F. Jones, M.P., wrote enclosing a copy of the Minister of Internal Affairs’ reply to representations from the council in respect of a rebate of rates on unoccupied property in unemployed rating areas. The Minister’s reply stated that it was not intended to bring down any amendment to the Rating Act, 1925, during the present session, but the representations made would be carefully considered when an amendment of the Act was under review.—Received. The sanitary and traffic inspector’s report stated that five drivers’ licenses had been issued and two drivers tested. Six heavy traffic licenses had been issued, and seven notices issued to motorists for minor breaches; Complaints had been attended to. —Adopted. In his report the foreman stated that patching streets and footpaths, carting spoil from lawns, etc., had been carried out, and suggested for the ensuing fortnight sealing and patching footpaths. The plant ivas in good order. There had been about 150 unemployed men grassing streets for the past fortnight. The report was adopted.
