FREE STATE ELECTIONS

ELECTION COUNT BEGUN IMPERSONATIONS WIDESPREAD Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright* • LONDON, January 25. (Received . January 26, at 1.40 p.m.)’ The Free State election count has begun, but owing to the intricacies due to proportional representation the final figures will not be available until late on Friday or Saturday. The poll averages SO per cent., compared with 75 per cent, last year. Few of the first preferences will be .decisive,-some of the contests needing a dozen successive counts. ' v Impersonations were widespread. The rowdyism was nothing unusual, though the military were-occasionally called to assist the police. A Ballydutf youth was shot in the leg. Soldiers threatened to use tear gas and quelled a disturbance in Monaghan. The unopposed candidates are Professor Thrift Alton, Sir James Craig (Independents, Dublin University), and the Speaker of Fianni Fail (Mr JTahy). Those elected include Mr Maguire, Mrs Coucannon, the woman novelist, and Mr M'Gilligan (Cosgraveite, National University). A severe blow was the defeat of the Cosgraveie ex-Speaker (Mr Hayes),The De Yaleraites are expected at least to retain the Dublin seats. Dir Cosgrave is polling well in Cork, and Dip De Valera is leading for Clare. Dip Dloore (a De Valeraite) was elected fop Wicklow, Dir L. Mahoney (a Cosgraveite) for Wexford, and Dir Cornish (Labour).
