TEN THOUSAND NAZIS
DEMONSTRATION IK RERUN CLASHES WITH COMMUNISTS Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. BERLIN, January 22. (Received January 23, at 11.25 a.m.) Ten thousand Nazis shivered in the bitter cold and falling snow awaiting the great demonstration in Buelow square in memory of a Nazi student, Horst Wessel, who was murdered by Communists in 1930. Thousands of police, including detachments armed with carbines, three machine gnus, and armoured cars, guarded the square, and took precautions to prevent a clash with the Communists. The precautions included a search of Karl Liebknecht’s house, also the Communist headquarters overlooking the square, for arms and munitions. Notwithstanding this, the Communists assembled in force in the neighbourhood, and numerous disturbances followed, in which scores of people were injured and two policemen were badly knifed. The police swiftly scattered the combatants by baton charges and firing shots in the air. Searchlight patrols continued after dark. The Nazis made a procession to tho cemetery, where a memorial to Wessel was unveiled, Herr Hitler officiating. He declared that the Nazis would fight until the great hour arrived and when disunity, distress, and hunger had disappeared from Germany. He recalled Bismarck’s words: “ We Germans fear God, no one else, even if the world is full of devils.” The ex-Kaiser and the Crown Prince sent wreaths. ONE HUNDRED ARRESTS BERLIN, January 22. (Received, January 23, at 1.45 p.m.) Armed police shepherded the Nazi procession through the working class quarters, where the Communists had, erected barricades of dustbins and blazing mattresses, necessitating the attentions of the fire brigades. The Communists in North Berlin dropped blazing oil barrels on Nazis marching homeward. The casualties include a woman who was badly wounded, a man shot dead by police bullets, and four policemen stabbed. One hundred arrests were made.
