PLUNKET SHIELD

WELLINGTON LEADS OH FIRST INNINGS CENTURY TO JAMES [Per United Press Association.] AUCKLAND, January 23. The Plunket Shield match was resumed in hot weather before_ a fair attendance. The wicket was in good order. Wellington were all out at noon for 397, giving the southerners a load of 31 on the first innings. James (87) took the first over from Bush and played a maiden, Parsloe (22) doing likewise to Garrard. By hooking Bush twice for a brace James started scoring, and in the next over pulled Bush to the boundary’. Parsloe was uncomfortable, and after poking at Garrard attempted to pull a straight ball, missed, and was out log before. 364—7—24. . , When Newman joined James the latter required only three runs for his century. Three singles put the visitors in the lead, and another made James 99. Keen to get the next run, James twice tapped Bush down the pitch and started off, but his partner was unwilling. and it was not until the last ball that the Wellingtdn captain slammed a full toss to the boundary amid sustained applause for his fifth century in shield matches. It is a coincidence that the Auckland captain, Weir, also has fire centuries to his credit in shield cricket.

James continued to bat with restraint until caught by a wretched stroke off Garrard in attempting to repeat a pull to the boundary. 380—8—108, The tail-enders did not stay long, Freeman having hard luck to play Bush on when shaping nicely, and Blundell being stumped in going for a big hit. D. R. Garrard, five wickets for 09, took the bowling honours, and the slow bowler well deserved his success, as he had to work hard to get any work on the ball on the easy wicket prevailing.. At lunch Auckland in their second innings had lost two wickets for 35. Details: —
