ACCIDENTS AND DEATHS
ENGLISH VISITOR DROWNED. A visitor from England, Mrs E. M. Allies, aged 45, who had been staying with her sister, Mrs Woods, at Birkenhead, Auckland, was drowned at Piha Beacn, West Coast, yesterday afternoon. Her body was recovered by three plucky youths twenty minutes after tho fatality had occurred. Mrs Miles arrived with her sister at Piha in the morning in a car driven by a friend, Miss Taylor. Some time after their arrival both Airs Allies and Airs Woods went bathing, and before long the former got into difficulties, having gone out beyond her depth. Neither of the ladies was a good swimmer, and Mrs Woods could do nothing to save her sister. The fatality happened near tho rocks, where a big sea was running in. Airs Woods ran up the beach for help, but could see no one about. In a few minutes she met some boys, who rushed down to the beach and were just in time to see Airs Miles disappear. It was five minutes before Airs Miles came to the surface again. The youths swam succeeded in bringing tho body ashore, one of the boys getting severely scratched, on the rocks in the attempt. Dr Woods was on the scene almost at once and applied artificial respiration, but to no avail. FENCE AND FATALITY. An Association telegram from Carterton states that a .middle-aged man, Walter Jamieson, employed on one or the coastal boats at Wellington, and spending a holiday with his sister, Airs Johnson, at Foatherston, was found dead last night. Deceased went rabbiting in the afternoon. He failed to return, and a search party found the body lying less than half a mile from the house with a discharged gun alongside. From indications, the deceased accidentally shot himself when getting through a fence. There was a terrible wound in his stomach. The body was removed to Featherstbn for an inquest. SINGLE WOMAN’S DEATH. Helen Stratton, a single woman, aged fifty years, who lived with her father at 93 Leith street, was found hanging in a washhouse at her residence at 7.30 this morning. The deceased had been in ill-health for some time. An inquest will be held.
