ROWING ASSOCIATION
REGATTA DATE ALTERED TO MARCH 4 TWELVE RACES—DONATIONS REDUCED BY iS Desirous of avoiding a clash between the date of its annual regatta and that of the band contest, the Otago Rowing Association last night altered the date of its fixture from February 18 to March 4. The same programme as last year’s, with a reduction of £9 in prize-money, was decided upon. Mr C. R. Caffin piesided over the following delegates;—Messrs J, P. Vallis (secretary), S. G. Styehe, F. Brough (Otago Club), W. G. Glengarry, P. Verngreen (North End), W. Robinson, S. Whitburn (Macandrew Bay), T. F. Maefcie, W. Lysaght (Port Chalmers), W. J. Wilson, W. Leftwieh (Queen’s Drive), P. J. Priest, E. W. I’ickford (Oamaru), and H. G. M'Alpine (University). The Chairman said that February 18 would be the start of the band contest with the C grade quickstep, in which the Port Chalmers band would compete. Several oarsmen would thus be affected. The support- of Port people was desirable, and it would be only natural that the best support would not be forthcoming if the regatta were held on February IS. As far as the speaker could see, 1 the most suitable day would be March 4. That would be the day of the New Zealand rowing championships, at Wanganui, but ho did not think that would interfere with any club except Port, whoso seniors were considering going north.
“It is due to finance that I consider we should alter the date,” said Ah- Wilson. “It is finance we want this year, and it would be a pity to hold the regatta on a day when many Port residents will be in the city.” The Chairman: Even if we held the regatta m Dunedin that day 1 do not think we would do any better, for there la no doubt - people follow bands. Air Brough: Since a number of Canterbury crews will be going to Wanganui there is little likelihood of representation at our regatta on the Saturday before of after the championships.
Mr Mackie: There are crews coming up from Invercargill, but the date will make little difference/to them. Mr Wilson: I suppose a notice of motion should have been given to alter the date.
The Chairman: Strictly speaking that is correct. Is it the unanimous wish of delegates to discuss the matter further ?
Voices: Aye. Mr Mackie: Is there any particular reason why tire regatta should not be held on February 25? The Port crew is desirous of thoroughly testing its worth before deciding if it will go to Wanganui. The Chairman; I would not like to see it held on the 25th. It would be suicidal. We would bo further in the mire. I would sooner see the regatta on the 18th than the 25th. On the motion of Mr Brough it was decided to alter the date to March 4. Finance was then discussed. The Chairman said that if last year’s programme were repeated (£6O in prize money), and £6O were spent in sending the eight to Wellington, all that could be expected in return would be £25. “ If we do that we will not have much to start off with next year, and we will have a pretty good scratch to get the eight away next year. Oarsmen will be able to compete at Waihnla for £2O more this year than in previous years, and this will make up for any reduction in prize money wo may pass on.’’ Mr Mackie moved and Mr Wilson seconded —“ That the Port Chalmers regatta programme of nine events for £4l 10s be repeated.” Mr, Vallis moved and Mr Pickford seconded—” That twelve events for £sl be included in the programme.” The amendment was carried, 8-7. Following was the programme drawn up:—Youths’ double sculls, 1.30 p.m., £2 and £1; maiden double sculls, 2.10 £2 and £1; youths’ fours, 2.20, £3 and £1; junior double sculls, 2.50, £2 10s and £1: maiden fours, 3, £4 and £1; senior double sculls, 3.30, £3 and £1; junior fours, 3.40. £4 10s and £1 10s; youths’ pairs, 4.15, £2 and £l;.senior fours, 4.30 dim), £7 and £2; maiden pairs, 4.50, £2 and £1; junior pairs, 5.25, £2 10s and £1; senior pairs, 5.45, £3 and £l. As Mr Glengarry had failed to submit in writing his notice of motion that clinker boats be used in the senior fours at the O.U.A. regatta, the .chairman would not allow any discussion on this matter.
Mr Glengarry explained that he liad spoken to Port Chalmers delegates after the last meeting, and had agreed with them that it should ho optional what boats were used. Had he submitted his motion ho would have worded it to that effort. Mr Mackie; We are reverting to where we used to be. but I give notice of motion that it be optional what boats are used. DAMAGED EIGHT. - The Chairman reported that the eight-oar boat, which was recently damaged, had been returned by the boatbuildcr, and the repair had been very satisfactorily effected. Mr Styclie said he had seen the boat, and one could rub his hand across the repaired hole and feel no edge. Other delegates expressed their satisfaction with the repair. WAIHOLA ENTRIES. It was decided that entries for the Waihola regatta bo accepted by the association, and that the closing date be January 25.
