SWIMMING

KiWI CLUB'S SUCCESSFUL CARNIVAL TWO NEW ZEALAND RECORDS BROKEN W. J. JARVIS AND REQ. GEDDES JN FORM Rarely have such scenes of enthusiasm been witnessed at the Municipal Baths as were shown at the Kiwi Amateur Swimming Club’s carnival last night, when W. J. Jarvis, of the St. Clair Club, who celebrated his sixteenth birthday that day, accounted for both the 50yds and 100yds invitation scratch races, breaking his own New Zealand record of 25 I-sscc for 50yds, which he covered in 2osec, and winning the 100yds scratch race in 58 1-Sscc —an Otago record. Jarvis was opposed by the Canterbury senior, 10. .M'Conville, who was second in the New Zealand 100yds championship last season, and who also equalled Jarvis’s time for 50yds recently. In the 50yds Jarvis scored a fine win by a yard; but the 100yds was

anybody’s race all the way, and as the swimmers matched stroke for stroke over the last lap the crowd was on its feet cheering wildly. By a great spurt over the last 10yds or so Jarvis won on the touch, his time being only 3-sscc slower than that of N. Crump in establishing a New Zealand intermediate record recently in the faster Auckland water. Jarvis swam with undoubted brilliance, and his supporters. are confident that this phenomena 1 youngster will Improve further upon this time at the New Zealand intermediate championships next week at Invercargill, M'Conville' put up a gallant fight in both races, hut lost slightly on the turns in the longer distance, while a bad turn in the-50yds really put. him out of the race. The Kiwi Club’s enterprise in bringing swimmers from Canterbury was well rewarded, for the baths wore packed

with .a largo crowd, who witnessed what was undoubtedly the most successful carnival of the season and one of the best over held in Dunedin, the entries being exceptionally large, the racing keen, and the swimming of a very high standard. George Low, the Canterbury hack-stroke champion, gave a-taste of his quality in the 100yds short-limit back-stroke handicap, in which he conceded 7scc to the winner, A. Thomas, and Csec to I’. Mathieson, who was second. Low was third, less than a yard behind the winner, and the Canterbury man broke 69scc for the distance. Thomas was in fine form on the hack stroke, and not only won the invitation event, hut also the S 3 l-3yds face on this stylo. Reg. Geddcs, who has been a consistctn record-breaker at the Kiwi Club’s carnivals, put up another sterling performance in lowering his own 100yds intermediate boys’ breast-stroke record of 76 2-ssec by 4-sscc, bis time being 75 3-ssec, as the result of an outstanding swim. The four-a-sidc relay championship of Otago was retained by the Dunedin No. 1 team after a fine race with Kiwi No. ], but (be latter team, which finished about a foot back, was disqualified for one of its members leaving before his time. In this race the time, Lain llsoe, was an Otago record. One of the features of the evening was the exhibition of plain and fancy diving given by Miss Joy Jiggers (the New Zealand ladies’ champion), who showed that she is now diving right'up'to her best form, her display being much appreciated by the largo crowd. Variety was lent to the proceedings by the clever novelty burlesque staged by J. Bcuficld, C. J. Lecden, and 0. Holland, who with the aid of canoes and fishing lines presented a skit entitled ‘ (H)anglers’ (H)oldorado,’ which brought forth roars of laughter from the spectators. The announcing of insults by a loud speaker system was a successful innovation, thanks to the efforts of Messrs A. Swann, A. Peterson, and H. Galt, of the New Zealand Association of Radio- Transmitters, in supplying the necessary apparatus. The whole programme was conducted without bitch, and reflected credit on the officials concerned.
