(Received December 21, at 1.30 p.m.)’] The interesting association of Akaroai with the hoisting of the British flag in the South Island of New Zealand was mentioned by Sir Thomas Wilford in a message delivered at a luncheon on the Akaroa on the eve of the vessel’s sailing. He complimented the company on its foresight in determining to be ready for good times, instead of waiting till they came. Mr John Macmillan said that from the point of view of utility there was no better ship in the New Zealand trade. Mr Malcolm MacDonald (Dominions Under-Secretary), in a happy speech,stressed the, importance of British ships in the flow of Empire trade.. [The Akaroa was recently purchased by the Shaw, Savill, and Albion Company, and was reconstructed for service in the New Zealand trade. She is a steel triple screw steamer, and was formerly the Euripides.]
