VICAR CHASED BY COW

TURNED TAIL AND FLED " Before being captured in front of the vicarage at Bentworth Alton, Hampshire, a mad cow, which had been at large for two days, chased the vicar into bis house; flung a bailiff over a high railing, churned up the vicarage lawn with its hoofs, and terrorised all the villagers round about. This is the story as it was told by the vicar, the Rev. J. D. M'Cready: “ I was strolling on my lawn to-day when I heard a loud snort, and turned round to see the cow nosing through the gate. 1 immediately turned tail and fled into the vicarage. After tossing the bailiff over a high railing it ran into a field beside the vicarage. Nobody could go into the field without being chased by the cow. “ At last someone hit on the bright

idea of placing three decoy cows m the field We thought there might be trouble, but the mad cow seemed pleased' to see her saner sisters, and eventually with a handful of hay and a few blandishments she was led away without much difficulty, Had I not closed the door after me the cow might have been in my library by now.”
