The Hon. W. Downic Stewart (Minister of Finance and Customs) was at the Ministerial board room in the Publie Trust building yesterday afternoon, and received private deputations in addition to attending to other public business. One of the deputations dealt with the question of taxation on the income derived from yertain sources by; trades unions and friendly societies. Today Mr Stewart was engaged in business of a private nature. To-morrow, afternoon he .will meet members of the . University Council and the Education Board' to discuss certain matters. Mr H. J. Geddes, M.Agric. Sc., assistant in agriculture at Lincoln Col-.’ lege, will leave in March nest to take • up an appointment as district agricul-! tural organiser in Tasmania under the Department of Agriculture of that State. Dame Sybil Thorndike and her dramatic company arrived at Wellington by the Zcalandia yesterday. At the conclusion of the annual meeting of the. Stock Exchango ’yesterday,j afternoon, the chairman (Sir Harman* Reeves) entertained the members to; afternoon tea at the Vedic Restaurant. < During the function the opportunity; was taken by the members to make a, 1 presentation to Mr Reeves in acknow- ; lodgement of his services during the year. In making the presentation, Mr 1 J. A. Haggitt referred to Mr Reeves’s i long association with the Stock Ex-! change and to the able manner in which' • he had conducted its affairs over a considerable period of years. Mrs Mary Barton, of Russell street,whoso death is announced, was the widow of Mr Jonathan S. Barton, a Gatlins settler, who died several years ■ ago. She came out by the Surat, and S was one of the passengers helped ashore ; at.the time of the wreck by the party; of rescuers c-f whom Mr Barton was one. A pleasing function took place at the Central Fire Station yesterday after- ■ noon, when Foreman W. Morrison was ] presented with the United Fire Brigades’ Association gold star for twentyfive years’ continuous service. The members _of the city brigade were paraded in the presence of Superinten-; dent J. J. Salmon and thy members of f the Fire* Board. The chairman of the i board (Mr J. Wilson) said it gave him; great pleasure to present the gold star j to Foreman Morrison, as it had been; worthily won by lang and efficient service. The death is announced of Sergeant Charles F. M'Glone, of Westport. The deceased, who was sixty-two years of age, was appointed a constable in 1897He was stationed in Dunedin for a number of years, and was then transferred to Orepuki. He was in charge of the station there until his promotion to the rank of sergeant in 1912, when he i was shifted to Dunedin, after which; he was transferred to take charge of. the Clyde district. He was in charge! of this area for some nine years; after- j wards he was appointed to the control of the Westport station, where he was] engaged until the time of his death.! Sergeant M'Glone was one of the best- ’ known_ of the earlier constables in; Dunedin, and was a very popular, conscientious, and painstaking officer. City Hotel guests include Mr and' Mrs J. Hargreaves (Pembroke) and. Messrs W. T. Campbell and T. S. Marshall (Invercargill).
