HARBOUR BOARD ELECTIONS
POSITION OF PAYERS OF DUES EFFORTS TO OBVIATE DISFRANCHISEMENT At the last election for a member of the Harbour Board to represent payers of dues there was considerable dissatisfaction because of the fact that payers of dues who paid such dues through agents were disfranchised through not being on the roll. The question was taken up actively by Mr Arthur M'Rae, who has been advised by the secretary of tho Harbour Board that it is desired to obviate the objection raised at the last election. The letter states that the lists of payers of harbour dues on ships and of payers of harbour dues other than dues on ships to the amount of £3 and upwards during tho year ending December 31 next have to be prepared bv January 25. “ From inquiries made from other boards,” states the board secretary, “ the simplest way" to do this is for the various agents to supply a declaration setting out names and addresses of those of their customers, with sufficient information to enable the eligibility of each to be verified, on whose account dues amounting to £3 and upwards have been paid during the year ending December 31 next. The names of those who I am satisfied are entitled to be enrolled will then be duly added to the list of payers ..of dues.” The secretary further advises that the roll is to he completed by January 25, and declarations should be sent to him at least three days prior to that date.
