“THOROUGHLY PLUCKED”
AN INEXPERIENCED PUBLICAN SHELVES STRIPPED BY CUSTOMERS [Special to tee ‘ Stae.’] AUCKLAND, December 10. Fines totalling £lO were imposed by the Magistrate (Mr M'Kean) on Albert Haitmeyer, licensee of the Carpenters’ Arms Hotel, and his wife. The prosecutions were the result of a police raid on the evening of November 5, when thirteen men were found drinking. “Ho has been thoroughly well plucked, and is giving up the hotel next Friday,” said Mr G. Uren, who appeared for defendants. “Haitmeyer was a baker by trade, and he and his wife were totally inexperienced hotelkeepers. On one occasion a fight started in the passage, and while the licensee and his wife wont to stop the trouble the shelves were stripped cf bottles by the customers in the bar. Another time somebody turned on the electric iron, and the place was nearly burned down.”
On the night the police visited the hotel both the public and private bars were “ in full swing.” Eight of the men were each fined £1 and costs.
