CHRISTMAS CHEER FUND CBHCEBT
In that the Dunedin Symphony Orchestra devoted the proceeds from its fourth concert in the Empire Theatre last night to the Christmas cheer fund, the orchestra must he highly commended for its unselfish action. The orchestra was quite up to form, and gave a delightful concert, all the items being warmly received. Throughout the programme the conductor (M. Do Rose) skilfully piloted his musicians through many difficult and exacting passages, and ' ably demonstrated his complete command over his orchestra and his X'csourcefulness in times of emergency.
A particularly spirited performance of the oxciting and evcr-popular ‘ William Toll ’ overture by Rossini opened the programme, the stirring finale working np to a most inspiring climax. The beauty of the two movements of Schubert’s ‘ Symphony in B Minor ’ (the so-called unfinished) was artistically treated, and the opportunities in this charming work were exploited to full advantage. A bracket of three lighter compositions, Liszt’s ‘Liebcstraume,’ the conductor’s own composition lor strings, ‘ Canto Amoroso,’ and an extract from ‘ The Seasons ’ (Tsehaikowsky), ‘ Noel,’ representing the seasons —were pleasingly played. Selections from ‘La Favorita ’ (Donizetti) were given sympathetic and hold treatment, a great deal of the solo work being very enjovabl© and specially Mr J. A. Wallace s violin solo, beautiful tone being secured, even in the difficult cadenzas. Two vocalists added variety to the programme. Mr Wilfred Kershaw’s rich baritone voice was heard in the solo ‘The Two Grenadiers’ (Schumann), his singing of which earned him a recall, and later he sang ‘ Hear Me, Ye Winds and Waves’ (Handel), in lino declamatory style. Miss Mae Mathcson’s delightful soprano voice and remarkable technique received excellent expression in ‘dhe Wren ’ (Benedict), with flute obligato by Mr H. Nees, and she also gave charmingly artistic renderings of Bishop’s i Bovc Has Hyes and White’s ‘ The Robin’s Song.’ Miss Sybil Baker "'as a most sympathetic accompanist.
