Rapid progress is being made in tho attempts to bring about communal and political peace in the country. For the first time it can be said that the situation is hopeful. Tho Government is adamant towards appeals for the release of Mr Gandhi, and this has led to a movement to get prominent Hindus persuaded to call off the campaign of disobedience. CRIMINAL ACTIVITIES DELHI, October 22. The Bombay Residency, which has hitherto been comparatively free from revolutionary activity, was shocked by an attempt to murder tho Indian deputy collector. The shot missed, and the assailant escaped in the darkness. A Hindu student and his little sister were severely injured, apparently by the premature' explosion of a bomb, in a house at Dacca, where the police later found explosives and revolutionary literature. TAMPERING WITH POSTAL SERVICE BOMBAY, October 22. The postal revenue has been depleted by an illegal private parallel delivery system, by which vast profits have been .made by the Surat district organisations allied to the Congress.
