TAX ON SANDWICHES
British tourists recently holidaying in Ireland were amazed when entering the Free State territory to be held up by the Customs officials demanding whether they had any sandwiches with them.
Certainly the officials were courteous and did not look famished by any means. But they tvere only obeying the Free State laws. Mr D« Valera’s tariff exacts a duty of 2d on every imported wrapped packet, whether it be a cube of Oxo, a box <>f pills, or a package of starch.
