ENGLISH CRICKET TEAM

FIRST MATCH IN AUSTRALIA PATAUDI OPENS WITH A CENTURY Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright PERTH, October 21. The match between England and Western Australia was opened to-day. The teams are England.—Jardine (captain), Wyatt, Patandi, Brown, Sutcliffe, Leylaud, Larwood, Ames, Mitchell, Verity, Rowes, with Paynter twelfth man. Western Australia.—Bryant (captain), Calder, Curtin, Drew, Halcombe, Hillsmith, Inveracity, Jarvis, Lovelock, Marton, O’Shauglmcssy, with Evans twelfth man. The wicket had been covered with tarpaulin for more than twenty-four hours, but one end was very patchy. The Englishmen paid undue respect do the bowling, play being dull and tedious for the first two hours and the hatting unimpressive.

Halcombe, who was bowling well, twice confidently • appealed fpr Ibw against Sutcliffe without success. Play livened up after lunch, and when the score got over the second century the batsmen began to take chances.

The feature of the day was the play of Pataudi, who revealed great footwork, artistry, and aggressiveness, defensiveness being his last resort. He makes all his shots with beautiful wrist action, and plays every ball. Ho is sure to be tire idol of the Australian spectators. He made 50 in ninetyseven minutes and a century in 182 minutes. His score included ten 4’s. The batsman was given rousing cheers, ns it was the first century of the tour. Subsequently Pataudi indulged in every adventurous stroke, but never losing poise. He got ICG, when he was caught on the boundary after 252 minutes. Sutcliffe is a safe batsman, as of yore. Jnrdino was the other taking batsman, showing great force in drives and good defence. The others were not remarkable. The speedy dismissal of Jardine, Ames, and Brown brought a change, the score going from four for 253 to six for 2CO. The tail batsmen made no showing, but Larwood gave a favourable impression with one or two good strokes. The local bowlers succeeded beyond anticipations. Halcombo had Sutcliffe puzzled occasionally. Martin, who got Sutcliffe eventually, took two wickets for 57, Halcombe getting three for 48. The fielding was excellent. Pataudi was missed being run out at 119 and again at 152, but few chances were missed. Towards the close of play light rain was falling. A thunder shower is expected, and the wicket was covered.
