PORT CHALMERS PRESBYTERIANS

NEW MINISTER INDUCTED The Rev. J. G. S. Dunn, who has been chosen to fill the vacancy in the Port Chalmers Presbyterian Church, was inducted last night to his new charge. The service was carried out by the representatives of the Presbytery, and in addition to a large attendance of tho congregation there were a number of friends and visitors present. The Rev. S. S. Francis preached the induction sermon, in the course of which he referred to the hardships entailed by the present depression, and the scope there was for sympathetic service, and for bringing the sustaining help of religion into the daily life of the people. The text was from Psalm 118, verse v., which was a prayer, and the answer to it was conveyed in Psalms 1 and 3, in the promise that “ whatsoever a righteous man doeth shall prosper.” The prosperity, however, which depended on bank balances and the like, though it indicated jvorldly prosperity, yet it was apart from the realisation of spiritual values which constituted the true fufilhnent of life. The eternal values only counted in the final analysis, and real prosperity depended on the moral fibre of the community. Professor Collie addressed the minister in an inspiring address on the mutual duties and opportunities of pastor and preacher. A living sympathy with his fellow-man came to tho minister in his experience as pastor, and as preacher he spoke in the name of God Himself. In clays like the present work was difficult, but how groat was the opportunity to supply the true bread of life 1

The Rev. Gordon Taylor addressed the congregation, saying he was sure they would do all in their power to make Mr Dunn’s ministry successful, for ho had pledged his heart to them in the love of Christ. The Rev. T. W. Potts was acting moderator.
