John Hoffs was the preacher. »*K ' B Australian wines have been very successful at the Bordeaux Exhibition, and it is undestood that Victoria alone will receive four gold and ten silver medals for the red wine exhibits, and three gold and seventeen silver medals for the white wines. • • ft • A London cable states that a ‘ Parliamentary Blue Book ’ relating to the Channel tunnel shows that with the exception of Sir John Adyc, the whole of the military critics pronounced against the work being proceeded with. • « • • At the Baptist. Conference, now sitting at Wellington, it was stated that the church was in a very prosperous condition, there being no less than 6,000 members of that denomination in the colonv. • * * * At a mooting of subscribers to the Burns statue funds, it was decided to procure a statue in bronze from Sir John Stcell. It was resolved that the pedestal should be of grey granite, with the basement of Port Chalmers Milestone. Messrs T. Fergus, M.H.R., R. Stout, Campbell, and J. Thomson were empowered to secure a suitable design.
