STATE SUPERANNUATION
AGE EXTENSION AND RETURNED SOLDIERS WAR DISABILITIES AFFECT EARNING CAPACITY The effect upon returned soldiers of extending the agje at which superannuation is paid in the Government service is mentioned in a letter received by the Dunedin Resturned Soldiers’ Association from one of its members. This member wrote to say that, as a returned soldier Civil servant, he would like to draw attention to one point in the report of tha National Expenditure Commission. He referred to the new proposals in respect to the superannuation fund. It was proposed to extend the retiring aga. That seemed to him to be very harsh, because, if a man was not able to complete his full term of service through ill-health, and was compelled to retire on medical advice, his superannuation payments were decreased accordingly. The writer considered that thte provision would be most unfair to returned soldiers who were not able through war disabilities to complete thenr full term of service. He maintained that the returned men compelled to retire at an earlier age should receive fiUe same payment that he would get if be completed the full term. . „ _ . , , The executive of the R.S.A. has decided to thank tibe member for drawing attention to the matter, and has set up a small committee to investigate. The opinion is largely held that many returned men will find their means of livelihood impaired by war disability before they reach the retiring age, and that there is something in the contention of the writer of the letter. A report on the subject will be submitted to the nexit meeting of the executive of the R.S.A.
