The Government analyst completed his examination of the swab that was taken from Autopay’s mouth, but found no sign of a drug. [A message from Sydney on October 5 read; —What is believed to be a glaring attempt to dope the New Zealand horse Autopay occurred about an hour before the Randwick Meeting was due to commence. A short man approached his stable on an adjoining course and gave Autopay a thistle, which he munched, but eventually spat out. Some stable boys saw the incident, and noticed the man gather np the thistle and thrust it into his pocket and hurry away. They pursued and caught him, and a violent struggle ensued, blows being exchanged. The man, however, escaped. The police later made an arrest.] SATURDAY’S SPORTS MEETING The first track and cycling meeting of the season will be held at the Caledonian Ground on Saturday afternoon, under the auspices of the Otago Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic and Cycling Association. A big and attractive programme has been arranged, and most of the local champions will be seen in action, including J. G. Barnes, Now Zealand cross-coun-try champion. The half-mile and mile, in particular, should provide stirring tussles, and an event that has not been held here before is l the two-mile relay, in which each man will run half a mile. A mile medley relay has also been included, and another attractive event will be the 220yds low hurdle race. G. S.-Cabot and other well-known walkers will probably be seen in action in the half-mile walk, and the four cycling events should provide keen competition, especially as riders will bo competing on the renovated banked track. A ladies’ 100yds has been included, and three secondary schools events are also being held, including a 440yds relay. Entries have been received from the Christian Brothers’ High School, Otago Roys’ High School, Mosgiel District j High School, and John M'Glashan Col- | lege. Trowern in a hard-fought contest, Irowern surrendering at the end of tbo ninth round. Blay fought vigorously, rousing the large audience to enthusiasm as the contestants freely mixed it in the early rounds. Blay displayed impenetrable defence and cleverly broke his opponent’s guard. His most effective blows were a right cross followed by a left hook. Trowern was down three times in the second round, and again in the fourth, eighth, and ninth rounds, and each time the New Zealander was glad to take the count to nine, it was no surprise when Trowern signified at the end of the ninth 1 round that he had had enough. In a match for the middle-weight championship of New Zealand between J. Musson, of Christchurch, 10.7, and Harold Price, 11.2, middle-weight champion of Victoria, Musson won two straight falls, tho match ending in the fifth round. Price showed temper during the bout, and blows were exchanged freely.
