IRONMASTERS’ TERMS

WOMEN’S EMPLOYMENT DEFINES [Per United Press Association-.] WELLINGTON, October 11. The employers in the engineering industry have issued a statement to the effect that the Employers’ Federation is in no way responsible for the ironmasters’ decisions regarding the terms and conditions of employment. The employers offered rates of pay ranging from 12s 4d a day for an entirely unskilled labourer to 16s a day for a skilled man. They were accepted by the great majority of workers in the industry throughout New Zealand. Regarding the employment of women the employers did not propose to employ women at any work that was now being done by men or in the same shops as men. They would be employed only in new work on light articles never previously made in New Zealand.
