CAVERSHAM SCOUTS
MEETING OF PARENTS' COMMITTEE
The annual meeting of the Caversham Scouts and Cubs Parents Committee was held in the Scout Hall last night. There was a good attendance., Mr J. C. White presiding. The annual report stated tnat tne work of the troop had been earned on during the year under the supervision of Scouter S. Cummings, who had several assistants during the period. Last Christmas the troop accepted the invitation of St. Martin’s Troop to a combined campatKuri Bush, and whilst the weather was not all that could bo desired the camp was thoroughly enjoved by all, and a most friendly spirit has existed between the members of the two troops since. A camp was held for troop and patrol leaders at the same place last Labour Hay, one of the committee (Mr J. Blyth) being in charge. The promotion of Scouter Cummings to the rank of district Scout master this year had necessitated the altering of the Scout night from Friday to Satindav, and a Sea Scout patrol was formed with the object of retaining the interest of the older hoys who otherwise might drift from the movement. The Cubs had been under the leadership of Mr E. E. Giles, and it was with the greatest regret that the committee accepted his resignation at its last meeting. With his son, Assistant Cubber T. Giles, the committee was always assured that the work of the Cubs would bo well attended to, with beneficial results to the boys. Before the end of the vear a day’s outing was given to the Cubs at the Gardens. The weather left nothing to be desired, and a big programme of sports, as well as the picnic part, was put through. The thanks of the chairman were extended to the members of the committee, whose unflagging efforts had been used in the interests of tho group. Last year a series of dances wore held, and whilst they showed a profit the committee decided at the beginning of this year .that the results were not commensurate with tho demands they made in time and money on members. The euchre parties had been run regularly each week both last year and this, and whilst sometimes the attendance was not all one might wish they had been a source of considerable revenue, and the committee was deeply grateful to those who had undertaken this selfimposed task. The Chairman, in moving the adoption of the annual report and balancesheet, said that a satisfactory credit balance was shown. The resignation of Assistant Cubber T. Giles created considerable discussion as to the most satisfactory lines to carry on, and it was eventually decided to apply for tho use of the gymnasium' on Thursday evenings instead of Fridays, and ask Cubber C. Ashby to take charge. A vote of thanks was passed to Mr Stuart Clarice for tho conscientious way in which he had taken charge of the euchre evenings. Tiio election of officers resulted; — Patron, Mr B. S. Black (mayor); chairman, Mr J. C. White: secretary, Mrs Homer; treasurer, Mr W. F. Lyon. Messrs 'White and Johnston were appointed to vote on behalf of the committee at the annual meeting of tho Scouts’ Association on Thursday evening.
