At a conference of mining managers and members of the local Miners’ Union at Broken Hill, Mr H. Emery, on behalf of the employers, said that the mining industry at Broken Hill was living on the exchange rate. The cash possessed by the companies was exhausted. The industry would have been closed twelve months ago but for large reserves. He added that the prices for metals were low, and there was going to be much unemployment unless costs were reduced.
