HOCKEY ON SKATES
Last Saturday evening at Skateways Rink, Christchumi, Murray’s and Skatoways teams met in a return match, which provided the large crowd of spectators with a splendid exhibition of tnis increasingly popular game. From the start Skateways attacked, and for the greater part of the first half had Murray’s on defence. Rush after rush was made, but the few that got past Dickison were well stopped by M‘Lcan (in goal). Finally James secured, passed right across to Colwell, who returned to Pendrick (at centre), whose shot at goal was well cleared. Malian (at half) scoured the return and scored with a fast shot before M‘Lean could recover. Murray’s immediately attacked, but Skateways defence was superb, and even M'Lean, who is reckoned to be the best centre-forward in New Zealand, was unable to break through. Half a dozen passing rushes were started by M'Lean, Warwood, and Carr, but each time Neate and Mahan would break up the movement, and the ball would be returned to Murray’s territory, where Dickison or Devlin would secure and immediately set their front line in action. Finally, after a fast passing bout, Carr beat Goalie Cox with a swift shot and equalised < the score. Almost immediately the final whistle sounded, and the game ended: Skateways 1, Murray’s 1. The game was eapablv handled by Mr A. Terry, of Dunedin. In the half-mile race V. Neafo defeated G. Mackintosh, of Dunedin, by about syds. ' The Olympians, another of Canterbury’s leading teams, which claims an unbeaten record, will play Murray s at the local rink in two weeks’ time, and Iwo weeks later Skater,-ays will play a return match Ui Dunedin.
