ARMISTICE SUNDAY
OBJECTION TO MILITARY PARADES
PEACE PROCESSIONS PREFERABLE fSi-ixiAi, to Tmc ‘ Star.’] CH J {ISTCHUJIC'H, September :IS. “ That this meeting recommends the holding of a peace procession and meeting on Armistice Sunday, both as a means of expressing determination to work for world peace, and as a protest against the proposals of the military authorities to hold a military parade on that day, and that the delegates be asked to commend the proposal to their respective organisations, with a view to securing their active cooperation.” The foregoing motion was carried at a conference of the No More War movement last evening, when strong criticism of the Defence Department in proposing to hold a military parade on Armistice Sunday was. voiced by the delegates. Mr F. Cole, secretary, in moving the motion, said that the hitherto Armistice Sunday had been one of those days given up to anti-war propaganda. One of the slogans used during the Great War was that it was a “ war to end war.” Mr E. G. Beardsley expressed the view that a counter-demonstration was the most effective protest against such a step as the military authorities proposed. He said it would be far more effect ive than any amount of written or verbal representation. Mr J. M‘Cu!loch said the churches could luudly refrain from lending their support to a movement for peace on Armistice Sunday. It was decided to ask the delegates to request their various organisations to make individual protests to the Defence Department against the holding of military parades on Armistice Sunday.
