Sir William Ellis, managing director of the great shipbuilding linn of John Brown, Glasgow, when interviewed in England on his return from New Zealand, gave high praise to the LyttoltonWollingtoii service (says an exchangcl, “ As the liners now go direct to Wellington,” he said, “ this .is a great convenience, as it lessons very considerably the amount of travelling involved. A very fine 1 ferry boat,’ ns it is still called, the Rangatira, of 0,000 tons, built by Messrs Vickers at Barrow, takes the visitor at twenty knots in every comfort down to Lyttelton, which is the port for Christchurch, which is reached in three-quarters of an hour by an excellent electric train service. For promptness and speed this is certainly the best ferry service i have experienced, the transhipping of 500 or more passengers with luggage from boat to train at Lyttelton in less than twenty minutes being certainly a creditable performance.” A USTR AIJ A N 1.0 A DING S. The Now Plymouth Harbour Board is faced with three alternatives in x-egard to its future dredging policy. One is to recommission the old Paritutu at a cost of from £B,OOO to £8,500, the second is to hire the Wanganui 'dredge Kaione, which last summer involved an expenditure of £5,200, and the third is to acquire a new dredge. A subcommittee was set up at the last meeting of the board to make inquiries regarding the Kaione, also to report generally on the position at the next meeting. ” The chairman of the board, Air C. E. Bellringer, stated, according to the ‘ Taranaki Herald,’ that he thought it was essential the board should within the next few years buy a new dredge specially constructed for the requirements of the port. The new dredge would not do heavy work, and when the time came for that, which he did not think would be for some years yet, the question of a bigger dredge would have to be gone into.
