Y.M.C.A. NEWS

(Contributed.) Boys’ Work.—An event of interest was the “ Father and Son Banquet ” presided over by the chairman of the division, Mr J. R. Fairbairn. About 100 fathers and boys attended, and after a lino banquet choruses and items were enjoyed, items were given by Master Norman Farrell and Mr Hopkins. The toasts of “ Fathers ” and thiit of “ Mothers ” wore ably proposed by Masters Geo. Coxhead and Bruce Kpcnce, respectively. The Rev. .Mead gave a iino address on the ‘ Game of Life.’ Arrangements are well forward in connection with the Boys’ Division bazaar on Friday afternoon and evening. • , Herbert Smith Shield.—Results to hand from the National Council at Wellington show that of the Y.M.C.A. competing for this all-round athletic test, Palmerston North proved winners on the aggregate. Dunedin has an excellent young athlete in Langford Smith, aged seventeen, who against the outstanding Y.M.C.A. boys Of New Zealand, was placed first in running, high jump, hop, step, and junixi, and 60yds potato race. Ho also came second in the standing long jump. Group Work.—This continues to bo carried on. There arc groups of boys engaged in an all-round programme— Bible study, lectures, educational, and gymnasium. General Religious Work.—The residents’ meeting continues to draw the majority of the residents, the speakers being Mr J. Freeman and Mr T. Howarth for the last two meetings. Staff and directors’ meetings arc held regularly, when a short devotional period is engaged in. In the Boys’ Division every group has Bible study as part of its night’s programme. Cricket.—What promises to bo a very strong club in the future has been formed and application has been made for affiliation with the Otago Cricket Association. The opening day takes place on October 8, when the team has challenged the directors to a friendly game. Ladies’ Auxiliary.—This auxiliary continues to make a big contribution to association life'by its loyal support of all activity put forward for the work’s sake. All are co-operating to make Red Triangle Street Day on Friday, October 28, a real success. In November an auxiliary bazaar will be held. Physical Work.—The annual gymnasium display takes place on October 8 and 10. Arrangements are well forward, and an interesting exhibition of all-round gymnasium work will be produced. Unemployed Boys’ Efforts.—Recreational and physical groups at the Y.M.C.A. are now in session. An 'experienced boxing instructor has been procured through the labour bureau, and young fellows can be assured of expert tuition. Basketball teams will bo formed, for two sessions a week, and cricket will commence on Wednesday afternoons as soon as the weather conditions improve. Seventeen boys have already enrolled at the King Edward Technical College, Mr Aldridge, principal of’tho college, meeting the boys at the Y.M.C.A. for the purpose of assisting them educationally, Mr Salmond. M.A., and Mr M'Cracken, of the W.E.A., have already held preliminary meetings to arrange lecture groups and supervised tours of industries.
