KIWI SWIMMING CLUB

BRIGHT PROSPECTS FOR SEASON Bright prospects for the coming season were indicated at the annual meeting of the Kiwi Amateur Swimming Club held last evening. The president (Mr A. Greig) presided over an attendance of seventy-four members. The Chairman expressed his gratification at the large attendance, and welcomed Mr D. Watson, one of the foundation members of the club. Ho also said he was pleased to observe among the new members Mr C. B. Stewart, who was a son of Mr D. M. Stuart, one of those responsible for the start of water polo in Otago. In returning thanks, Mr Watson said that Mr T. Eogg, one of the club’s patrons, had offered to donate a cup or gold medal for competition during the coming season.—lt was decided to write thanking Mr Fogg for his offer. Mr Greig referred to the loss sustained by the club in the death of its patron, Mr A.-Murdoch, and Mr C. H. Hayward, one of the vice-presidents. They had been honoured and respected by all members, and Mr Murdoch’s work on behalf of the juvenile members of the club would not soon be forgotten. Mr Greig also expressed the sympathy of the club to Mr B. Jleslie on the death of his mother.

Mr Nl Murdoch said he deeply appreciated the sentiments that had been expressed concerning his late father, who had been so closely associated with the Kiwi Club. He intimated that he would present the club with a cup for competition at its annual carnival as a memorial to bin father the Chairman extending the club’s thanks for his offer.

The adoption of the annual report and balance-sheet was moved by the Chairman, who congratulated the chib on the successful year it had experienced ami on its sound financial position. He referred to the fine work that had been done by the club captain (Mr H. D. Gillies) and the de-puty-captain (Mr M. Taylor), the latter being responsible largely for the success that had attended the club's social activities. He thanked the ladies’ captain (Miss J. Taylor) and also Miss M. Boulton for their untiring efforts during the season, and expressed the appreciation of the whole club to the Ladies’ Committee, which had comprised Mesdames P. A. Mathieson, W. S. Hindmarsh, Hall, T. Niehol, \V. Lang, and H. Jarvis. Ono of the features of the season, said Mr Groig, was Miss Jean Taylor’s fine showings in harbour swims, she having won both tho club harbour swim and the centre’s Batt Cup harbour race. A. Thomas has swum excellently to put up fastest time in tho club’s harbour race. The competition provided in the intermediate class by W. J. Jarvis, of the Dunedin Club, and Reg. Geddes, of Kiwi, had brought out the host in both boys, he stated, and apart from Reg.’s championship successes ho was proud of the record lie had established by breaking the nine-years-old New Zealand intermediate breast-stroke record of Clarrie Heard. lated P. E. Mathieson on winning the New Zealand intermediate diving championship and Miss N. Olds oh the way she had swum in the junior girls’ breast-stroke at the Otago championships, her time being 2 l-ssec faster than that recorded at the New Zealand championships. Mr Greig thanked all who had helped to make a success of the club’s coaching activities, and urged' senior members to do all they could to improve the young swimmers and new members during the coming season. The club had much promising material to work upon, and he trusted it would have a most enjoyable and successful season. (Applause.)

Mr H. D. Gillies seconded the mo-, tion. which was carried. Nine new members were elected.

It . was decided to held the official opening night of the club at the Municipal Baths on Tuesday, October 4, and to arrange a programme of competitive and novelty events.

A recommendation was carried that the incoming committee appoint a training and coaching sub-committee to arrange for systematic coaching at the club hours, ” especially on Tuesday nights. After the business of the annual meeting was completed members were entertained at a social hour, games and billiards being indulged in, while a number of those present took part in dancing, the music being supplied by Mrs 11. Jarvis and Mr Pearson. The Ladies’ Committee provided supper, and all present voted the function a most successful one.
