DAMAGE AT WAIROA
CABINET AUTHORISES IMMEDIATE WORKS PONTOON BRIDGE TO BE BUILT [From Our Parliamentary Reporter.] WELLINGTON, September 27. The Government is taking immediate steps to give relief to the residents of Wairoa, with the object of alleviating the distress caused by the recent earthquake. The Acting Minister of Works (Mr Alaemillan) stated to-day that Cabinet had agreed to an expenditure amounting to £950 for the repair of the pipe lines and so on. It had also been decided to proceed immediately with the erection of a pontoon bridge across the river, at an estimated cost of £SOO. Use will be made of a number of fortygallon oil drums, of which there are quite a number out towards Waikarernoana. At present people were being transported across the river by means of a punt, but as the punt could only be at one side of the river at one time, there was often a delay amounting to about ten minutes. Provisions had been made for the unhooking of the bridge, at flood time, so that the structure would not be damaged by timber coming down the river. The work is to be put in hand at once.
