SUMMING BY MEN
Slimming, hitherto so popular with women in Britain and the United States, is now being taken up by an increasing number of men, says a London newspaper. Those who a year or so ago gave scarcely a thought to their waistlines are now scrupulously careful about what they eat, and discuss diet just as eagerly as their womenfolk, and argue over the merits of various sports and exercises as a means of getting down weight. Among the reasons given for this sudden development are; Men are realising that excessive weight js unhealthy; that a diet, based on moderation and expert advice, is an aid to fitness; and that many men are actuated by vanity. No dieting or slimming should be undertaken before consultation with a doctor. Doctors pointed out to a ‘ Daily Mail ’ reporter that too drastic efforts to reduce weight, either by dieting or
exercise, may have serious consequences. “Slimming is much more .difficult for most men than for women,” said one doctor. “ and they should take the greatest care. Many men eat far too much, and a reduced diet, with more exercise, is an excellent thing, provided it is not overdone. When a man who has been reducing feels sleepy during the daytime and generally lacking in initiative, it is the danger signal.”
Sir W. Arbuthuot Lane, president of the Now Health Society, said: “Slimming is a splendid thing provided it is done sensibly and under proper supervision. Excessive starvation should always be guarded against.
