HOW NELSON SAVED A TOWN
Mr E. E. Long. C.8.E., writing in the August number of the 1 P.L.A. Monthly,’ recalls an incident m connection with Manteca Bay. Jamaica, showing the presence of mind of Nelson, and how his prompt action saved disaster. “In Nelson’s , day vessels of the British Navy often visited Montego Bay. and it was here on one occasion that Nelson, when ashore on a visit, saw from the verandah of a house (which still exists) that one of the men-of-\yar in the harbour was on fire. Rushing down to the pier, he put off‘in a boat, got to the hurning vessel, boarded her. and had all of her guns, which were trained directly on the town, pointed upwards. A few minutes later she blew up. Nelson’s courage and foresight had saved Montego Bay!”
