HIGH SCHOOL FOUNDATSON

THE ANNUAL SERVICE ■ The service which is held each year at the Otago Boys’ High School under the auspices of the Old Boys’ Society on the Sunday nearest to Foundation Hay (August 3) was yesterday conducted by the Rev. G. L. Taylor, of Musselburgh, himself an old boy and an ex-master of the school. Associated with Mr Taylor were the rector (Mr W. J. Morrell), the president of the Old Boys’ Society (Mr J. J. Mallard), and a number of masters and old boys. About 100 old boys were seated in the body of the school hall, together with a large number of the present-day pupils. After the opening hymn and prayer the lesson was read from Hebrews si. and xii. by Mr Mallard. Mr Taylor’s address was based on the text “ Seeing wo also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let ns lay aside every weight and the sin which cloth so easily besot ns, and lot ns rim, with patience the race that is set before, ns.” His remarks were based upon the influence of tradition, special reference being made to the work of masters of the school and to the careers of old boys, which bad left so strong an impression on the minds and characters of the boys who bad passed through Ihe school gates. Towards the close of his remarks Mr Taylor made fooling reference to the death of an old boy of the school, one of its brilliant scholars, Mr P. W. Aitkon. The service was concluded will) flic singing of the hymn ‘Load. Kindly Tiig'ht, 7 and the National Anthem. Professor T. D. Adams presided at the piano.
