The mayor (Mr R. S. Black)' is at present indisposed and confined to bed.In making a presentation to Adjutant Wood, of the Salvation Army, in-the Town Hall this morning the mayoress (Mrs R. S. Black) spoke in glowing terms of Adjutant Wood’s work, and remarked that, although the adjutant was of a retiring nature, the work she had performed was tremendous, and,many hundreds of homes in Dunedin were happier for her kindly word and help.Adjutant Wood has been transferred to Christchurch.
Mr A. H. Allen left this morning for, Wellington to attend a meeting of the; executive of the Associated Chambers of Commerce. Mr A. W. Macdonald and Master Lex Macdonald, who is to sing at the Male Choir concert to-night, were passengers by this morning’s express for gillMr C. F. Allcott, the Auckland and New Zealand representative cricketer,-' has been transferred to Wellington. Mr W. P. Aldridge, Chief Postmaster,: Timaru,' has received advice of his appointment to the position of Assistant Chief Postmaster at Wellington. Mr E. R. Blewett, who tor the past, seven years has been accountant at the': Nelson Post Office, has been promoted to auditor of Post Offices, with head-* quarters at Wellington. , The death occurred at Timaru at the end of last week of Mr P. G. for many years associated with the Tiniaru * Post.’ The late Mr Robertson,: who was a native of Dunedin, on leaving school served his apprenticeship with, the well-known firm of Stone and Co* Fourteen years ago he went to Timaru * where he joined the staff of the ‘ Tim-* am Herald ’ Company, and about ten years ago left that position to take up the position of foreman printer with the ‘ Timaru Post * Company, with -..lnch he remained till the time of his death.From his earliest years the late Mr. Robertson took a keen interest in tennis, on which he was a recognised authority, and for a number of years acted as secretary to the South Canterbury Association, proving himelf an adept in the control and management of tournaments. Mr Robertson is survived by Mrs Robertson (nee Wallace), and one sen,, Mr Wallace O. Robertson, the South Canterbury singles tennis champion, nsd also holder of the South Island men’s singles championship. The Commissioner of Taxes (Mr E. J.Gumming), whose retirement on superannuation is announced after thirty years of service, was born in Melbourne of New Zealand parents in 1878. Ha, came to New Zealand at an early age,; and was educated at the Dunedin Nor-, mal and Technical Schools. Joining the Land and Income Tax Department as a cadet in 1897, he was later transferred; to Christchurch. He joined the staff of j the head office in Wellington in 1901.-' Mr Gumming passed through all grades; of assessing and inspecting work, and in' 1917 was appointed to the position of j chief inspector. In 1925 he was pro-; moted to the position of Deputy Commissioner of Taxes, and on June 14,. 1928, he became commissioner, succeeding Mr A. E. Fowler, Visitors to the Grand Hotel include Mr and Mrs J. P. Macneil (Melbourne), Mrs A.- E. O’Meara (Hastings), Messrs Duncan F. Bauchop and S. C. Brown.. (Wellington), Mr and Mrs Stewart Mair (Christchurch), and Misses S. aiid P. Lane (Oamaru). Registrations at the City Hotel are Messrs 8. S. Bridgeford, H. M. Schrimshaw, and 11. Gonver (Wellington), Mr F. Taverner (Geraldine), Mr L. W* Payne (Timaru), and Mr and Mrs L.Pavletich (Hakataramea).
