MARKET FOR DEER SKINS
GOVERNMENT OFFERS FURTHER INCENTIVE [fen United Press Association.! WELLINGTON, June 24. An indication of the progress made in establishing a market for deer skins and of the efforts of State officials to lessen the deer peril was given to-day by the Minister of Internal Affairs (Hon. A. Hamilton). As a means of inducing greater supplies of skins to be sent forward than lias formerly been the case, the Minister stated that a bonus of Is 4d per lb would be paid for skins coming up to the requirements laid down and delivered in dry and otherwise good condition. The bonus would be obtainable by persons not connected with the department’s own deer destruction parties. deceiving depots would be established in Wellington, Blenheim, Hokitika, Lyttelton, Dunedin, and Invercargill. The position had now arisen, proceeded the Minister, that more skins were required to meet the present demand and establish the market firmly. The trying out of the markets had So far been done with skins obtained by the department’s own deer destruction parties. Over 8,700 skins had been disposed of during the past financial year. The Department of Internal Affairs had paid out by way of a tail bonus in the South Island £1,562 during the same period. The department’s own parties had accounted for 11,000 certified kills, and had saved about 6,100 skins. Mr Hamilton added that there would now be a greater incentive to persons to help in ridding the country of an undoubted menace.
