OTAGO IMPORTERS AND SHIPPERS ASSOCIATION
The monthly meeting of the executive of the Otago Importers and Shippers’ Association was held on Tuesday evening, the chairman (Mr H. C. Campbell) presiding. Amongst other matters brought forward was that of the Maui Pomare and the banana trade, and it was noted that the present Auckland contractors for tho Samoan output had evidently exercised their option to cancel their contract as from June 30 next, and as a consequence the Government were now calling for tenders both on f.o.b. and c.i.f. terms. It was felt that, after past experiences, no firm would tender unless on tho latter basis, and that it was possible that the contract might again be taken up by Dunedin merchants. The next item considered was the new Canadian tariff, it being suggested that there might be certain points therein that it might bo to the advantage of importers to have reviewed at the coming Imperial Trade Conference at Ottawa. After discussion, it was decided that any such action could probably be better left to the individual firms interested; at the same time, should any importer consider that the association could be of assistance on the lino suggested the executive would be glad to know of it. The suggested tariff agreement with Belgium was also referred to, but it was decided to defer consideration to a later date. Regarding claims, tho secretary reported that one of tho two mentioned at the last meeting had been satisfactorily adjusted, and that he had good hopes of securing a settlement of the other in the near future.
