TRIBUTE TO A DOG

IMAGE CARVED IH STONE In the Riverside Cemetery at Oshkosh, Wisconsin, there stands a gravestone erected to the memory of Mr J. C. Spalding, who died on September 12, 1876. Beside the stone is the image of a mastiff dog, carved in marble. Thus with the memory of Mr Spalding always will be associated the memory of his noble dog. The faithful animal during life was constantly in the company of its master. _On more than one occasion it showed its readiness to lay down its life for its best friend. When Mr Spalding was on his deathbed the dog could not bo coaxed away from the room in which its master lay. When Mr Spalding died it seemed as though the dog knew. On the day of the funeral the dog followed its master U) the grave. It refused to return home. Food was taken to it, but it refused to cat. There it remained until it, too, died. The Spalding family engaged an artist to carve its image in stone.
